Places to visit Bellagio

Few places are as romantic as Lake Como, and even fewer resorts as beautiful as Bellagio. Called the “Pearl of the Lake”, Bellagio's world class hotels and restaurants provide the perfect place to soak up the lake's famous panorama. The village is characterised by century-old buildings, stone lanes and picturesque cobbled stairways filled with shops showcasing the finest Italian wares.

MUSEUM OF NAVIGATIONAL INSTRUMENTS

In an antique tower-shaped house properly fitted out for the purpose, you find on exhibition more than two hundred precious objects, which have allowed mankind in past centuries to orient himself on the seas and to sail toward new worlds. Among the most interesting instruments in this private collection are to be found XVIII century telescopes made in Venice, compasses and solar clocks of various periods together with a rich collection of marine chronometers, an armillary sphere and a stupendous planetarium in brass. The Museum is to be found in the suburb of San Giovanni, Piazza don Miotti, at about 25 minutes on foot from the historical center of Bellagio.

HOW TO REACH

The hamlet of St. Giovanni can be rached following the road that from the centre of Bellagio leads to Como. On foot approx. 20 minutes.

It is open during the summer season from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm or by appointment.

BASILICA DI SAN GIAComo

Borgo di Bellagio - Bellagio (Co)

Stupendous example of the Roman-Lombard art (XII cent.), built between 1075 and 1125 by the Masters of Como. Inside mosaics of the early ‘900, rich altar of the end of ‘500, a “Deposition of Christ” by the Perugino school, an archaic cross (XII cent.), a triptych by Foppa (1432), a polychrome wooden sculpture of the “Buried Christ” of the Spanish-Baroque school. Sunday Mass: 8.00 am - 11.30 am

HOW TO REACH

Situated at the top of the historical part of Bellagio. Easily reacheable on foot in few minutes from the boat landing stage.

CHIESA DELLA MADONNA DEL ROSARIO A S.MARTINO

Frazione Visgnola - Bellagio (Co)

Romanesque style, inside a multiple panel of the Lombard school of the early ‘500, a wooden sculpture representing the dead Christ, the “Madonna delle Rose”, stupendous painting of ‘500. Unfortunately is rarely open to the public.

S.MARIA A LOPPIA

Frazione Loppia - Bellagio (Co)

Small Romanesque basilica, hut-like façade, traces of frescoes, semicircular apse, bell-tower crowned by small arches; situated in the park of the villa Gerli and visible from Loppia (no public entry).

HOW TO REACH

The hamlet of Loppia is situated right at the end of the garden of Villa Melzi or following the road that from the historical part of Bellagio go to Como. On foot approx. 15 minutes.

CHIESA DI SAN GIORGIO

Romanesque chapel dating back to the period of 1080-1120. Inside the wooden statue of “Madonna della Cintura” (of the Belt).

HOW TO REACH

Situated right at the top of the historical part of Bellagio just next to the townhall.

CHIESA DI SAN GIOVANNI BATTISTA

Baroque building (XVII cent.), one nave, wooden altar of ‘600. Inside the “Madonna delle Grazie”, fresco of the Lombard school, a sculture of the “Immacolata” in marble of Carrara (Bernini school), a choir in walnut with carved stalls (XVII cent.), and a painting by Gaudenzio Ferrari (1532). Sunday mass: 10.00 am

HOW TO REACH

The hamlet of St. Giovanni can easily be reached following the road that from the centre of Bellagio leads to Como. On foot it takes about 20 minutes.

VILLA MELZI D' ERIL

Bellagio (Co)

Magnificent residence built in 1808 for Duke Francesco Melzi D’Eril, friend and political associate of Napoleon Bonaparte. Tickets include entrance to the neo-classical Chapel, the museum and the park with its interesting sculptures and stupendous azaleas and rhododendrons. The present owner is Count Gallarati Scotti.

HOW TO REACH

The entrance of the Villa Melzi garden is situated right at the end of the lake promenade in direction of Como. From the car ferry landing stage on foot max 10 minutes from the boat one max 15 minutes.

VILLA SERBELLONI

Bellagio (Co)

Splendid views of the Como and Lecco branches of the Lake from the XVIII century garden as well as views of the lake’s northern branch and the Pre-Alps from the remains of the fortification on the top of the promontory. Villa Serbelloni’s park can only be visited on guided tours for a minimum of 6 people and a maximum of 30. Tours last about 1 hour 30 minutes, leaving at 11 am and 4 pm from the medieval tower in the St. Giacomo square in the upper part of the town. Groups need to book in advance.

HOW TO REACH

You need to reach the square of the church of St. Giacomo in the upper part of the historical center of Bellagio. Allow 10 minutes for the walk from the boat landing stage. Allow 20 minutes for the walk from the coach/bus/car parking area.
